Stoke is one of important diseases harmful to health, the incidence of which is the highest in our country. Through the clinical dan animal researches on the diagnosis, treatment and mechanisms of stoke, we set up the diagnosis and treatment system focusing on acupuncture and moxibustion. Xing Nao Kai Qiao (XNKQ, activating the brain and opening orifices) acupuncture therapy has been formulated on basis of our new knowledge on pathogenesis of stoke which is mainly due to obstruction of brain orifices and hiding of vitality. The acupoints on Yin meridians and Du meridian are mainly selected and standard quantitative manipulations are applied emphatically. The main acupoints are as follows: Neiguan (PC6), Renzhong (DU26) and Sanjinjiao (SP6). The total effective rates were all over 98% for 9005 patients of stroke on every course by "XNKQ" therapy, much more effective than other kinds of therapies. The earlier "XNKQ" acupuncture therapy were used, the better effect could be achieved. We also discuss the therapeutic mechanisms of "XNKQ" on stroke from aspects such as circulation improvement, ultrastructure changes in brains cells, reperfusion injury caused by free radicals, overload calcium ion in cells, changes of neurotransmitters in brain, improvement of apoptosis, stress genes, transcription activity of DNA and RNA and so on. A lot of clinical and animal researches has prove that "XNKQ" acupuncture therapy is effective for stroke.
